Lisa at Open Studio introduced me to the Mosaic maker at Big Huge Labs. I am going to have a lot of fun with this! Here’s a collection of flower photos I have taken over the past year to use on my other blog. (Click on the mosaic to get a larger view. The colors are stunning.) Be sure to check out Lisa’s collage of flickr photos too!

Taxed Enough Already

The crowd in Atlanta was close to 16,000.–much better organized than the small, relatively spontaneous but enthusiastic crowd which I joined outside of the San Jose IRS building (see photos below.) In Atlanta, live speakers were accompanied by a huge screen displaying one minute clips of citizens speaking their minds: sharing both what they believe IN as well as offering criticism. It’s only because of all the things which are right about this country that we are able to speak so bluntly about what is wrong. How wonderful to have the freedom to speak–as well as the wealth necessary to provide individual citizens the opportunity and the means to express such great ideas!  The clip below includes a friend’s portion (Go Jenn!) Check it out at minutes 1:12-2:30.

Below are photos from the San Jose Tea Party. It was cold and windy even though it looks so sunny. The mood was up beat and positive–not angry or violent. There were moms with young children, well-dressed white-haired women who looked as though they could have been on their way to church, a middle-aged man in a wheel chair, another man in full Harley-Davidson leathers, businessmen and business women, old and young. Many racial backgrounds. Typical Americans.

Spontaneous conversations struck up everywhere. People driving by would honk and signal “thumbs up” –triggering cheers and more energetic waving of signs. It really did have the atmosphere of a party. People were obviously proud of coming out to declare what they are FOR as much as what they are against. I was impressed by the creativity of the signs, and the fact that so many of them indicated an understanding of how our government is moving toward socialism and how destructive socialism is to our liberty and prosperity. I am really glad I was part of it.

Goin’ to a Tea Party April 12, 2009

On Wednesday, I am heading off to a Tea Party! Apropos April 15, it’s in front of an IRS building. I am trying to decide on a sign slogan. I’d like something which encapsulates a sense of outrage at the recent excesses of spending and abuse of political power. Here’s a few ideas which come close, but I am not totally satisfied with:

Big Government–Big Spending –Big Mistake
(doesn’t seem specific enough, but my favorite so far)

Free People need Free Banks
(no outrage)

Separation of Market and State.
(too nerdy)

Any suggestions?

Thank goodness for my daughter and her endless energy. I had thought about what to do for April Fool’s day–then when I was not instantaneously struck with an idea on what to do (I had already rejected my son’s friend’s suggestion of  mustard-and-mayonnaise sandwiches to replace my son’s daily packed lunch of PB&J as just too cruel since he is currently skipping breakfast)–I rapidly moved on to the other tasks of the day.

Much later, pulling into the driveway in the dark  after visiting a neighbor at the hospital who just put his wife into comfort-only care –not a great opportunity for joviality–something odd caught my eye. A clump of willowy stalks were sticking up at odd angles from a patch in my front lawn.  As I approached my front steps, I was greeted by the miracle of  tropical flowers blooming along our front walk!  “That’s strange,” I thought, “What in the world possessed Eva to do that?”  At the front door was a sign “April Fools” and I had my answer.  So much better than last several years with the saran-wrap on the toilet seat, and the rubber-band on the kitchen sink sprayer.

Here’s what they looked like this morning:

But the best came later when I pulled back the covers to crawl into bed:

And a few close ups of this inspired creativity:

(I particularly love the detail of the hairy chest.)

I sure hope I can live up to this challenge and not be such an old fuddy-duddy next year.  Better start plotting planning now.

Saturday morning.  Grey, cloudy, cool, contemplative. My family is all still tucked away between their warm, flannel sheets. I browse through the news and my favorite blog commentators. So hard not to become discouraged by the barrage of statist measures spewing forth from our new administration and Congress (no party is  exempted.)

Mindless blame casting. Mangling and misrepresenting economic principles.  Belligerent self-righteousness empty of any pretense  of responsibility. I want to crawl back under the sheets and ignore it all.

So let me give thanks to LB over at 3 Ring Binder for her gentle reminder of what my life is truly about.

A Woman Reasons

Four reasons prompt her choices of the day;
There are four reasons in the woman’s mind:
She has her Home, clutter to keep at bay
Safe for living, even for the dirt-blind:
She has her Children, oh sweet young being
Whose righteous growth she must attend
And remind herself that daily overseeing
Is about the means and not the end:
Her Husband is part of her ageless plan
That halves the sorrow and doubles the joy
Remembering that while she married the man,
She remains the girlfriend to the boy:
She has her Self and about this she is wise;
Knowing Self is that on which all the rest lies.
