Seeing the Economy Everywhere May 2, 2009

I continue to be appalled by the massive increase in the role of government into our private lives. The number of people who are protesting this on blogs and at T.E.A. Parties is encouraging, but it seems as though the bulk of U.S. citizens do not find this intervention alarming. It’s hard to get a sense of what proportion welcome these intrusions, and how many are silently acquiescing. It is to the latter that I dedicate my remakes of H.T. Webster‘s delightful depictions of Caspar Milquetoast. The B&W portions are Webster’s. My additions are in red.
(HT to Gus Van Horn for alerting me to Webster’s work.)

On Wednesday, I am heading off to a Tea Party! Apropos April 15, it’s in front of an IRS building. I am trying to decide on a sign slogan. I’d like something which encapsulates a sense of outrage at the recent excesses of spending and abuse of political power. Here’s a few ideas which come close, but I am not totally satisfied with:
Big Government–Big Spending –Big Mistake
(doesn’t seem specific enough, but my favorite so far)
Free People need Free Banks
(no outrage)
Separation of Market and State.
(too nerdy)
Any suggestions?

Easter is supposed to be a time of renewal and hope. These silly clips do wonders for my sense that all is not lost as long as I can smile and laugh as well as protest. As I watch our rights and liberties eroded daily by the government meant to protect them, I need a bit of humor to boost my spirit and energize me to fight the good fight.
Enjoy.
