Winter Flowers by Lisa Kairos
Working in Wax
May 3 – June 21, 2009
Opening reception: Wednesday, May 6, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. This technique was notably used in the Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 100-300 CE, in the Blachernitissa and other early icons, as well as in many works of 20th-century American artists, including Jasper Johns. This national exhibition, juried by Eileen P. Goldenberg, will feature some of the most renowned artists working in this medium today and will provide an arena for educating other artists and students about the past and possibilities of working in wax.

Winter Solstice with Solstice
3:00 PM
The Church of the Epiphany 1839 Arroyo AvenueSan Carlos CA
For the first time in our 13-year history, Solstice will be performing on the Solstice! The concert will be a mixture of songs old and new, celebrating the season in many styles and languages. Come join us to relax and recharge on Sunday, December 21 at 3:00 pm, at The Church of the Epiphany.
And, we can make your holiday shopping EASY by suggesting Solstice’s newest CD, Rise. From Bartok to Björk, from Palestrina to Paul Simon, this CD has a mixture of styles that will delight and surprise your recipients.
I’m unable to upload a sample song, but if you want to listen, try here. A few of my favorites are Hotaru Koi, Ergen Deda and Java Dive.
(Our friend Krista is the one in the middle.)

I love art. What a gift to be able to give others a glimpse of those private, wordless parts of ourselves. To take a thought, an idea, a feeling, and give it physical form.
I particularly love art that helps me slow down, focus, and center in on the joy of living. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of doing, living, acting, that I forget to take the time to reflect, notice, enjoy.
So treat yourself to some art. Find something you love, and then ask, Why?
I love this one because it melds art and science, two things often thought of as opposites, but they aren’t. I like the surprise of being reminded of that in a gentle way that says “Look. Here we are. Together. As we should be.”
Check out more at RinatArt and at her show at the Hunter’s point Open Studios on Saturday, November 1, 2008.
